Money & Possessions in Luke’s Gospel

1:53    Magnificat:  He has.. sent the rich away empty

3:10 ff  John the Baptist:  share coat, collect no more than your due, don’t extort money

4:3-4    One does not live by bread alone

4:18    He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor

5:14    Go show yourself to the priest as Moses commanded, and make an offering

5:27    Levi, a tax collector sitting at tax booth, left everything and followed Jesus

6:20      Blessed are you who are poor  (NOT poor in spirit, Matthew) …Woe to you who are rich

6:30    Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.

6:34    If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?

6:35    Lend expecting nothing in return

6:38    Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.

6:46    Why do you call me “Lord, lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?  …Build your house on the rock

7:22    Go and tell John….the poor have good news brought to them

7:24    What did you go out in the wilderness to look at?...Someone dressed in soft robes?  Look, those who put on fine clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces.  What then did you go out to see? A prophet?  Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

7:29    And all the people who heard this, including the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.;

7:36 ff    Woman who is a sinner anointed Jesus’s feet.  Jesus:  a certain creditor had two debtors; one owed 500 denarii, and the other 50. which will love him more/

8:1ff    Some of the women who follow Jesus “provided for them out of their resources.”

8:14    Sower:  As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear; but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasure of  life, and their fruit does not mature.

8:18    Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.

8:43  Hemorrhaging woman: though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her

9:3    Take nothing for your journey, no staff nor bag, nor bread, nor money

9:13    Jesus:  go and give them something to eat.  Disciples:  We have no more than 5 loaves and 2 fish – unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.

9:23    If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.  For those who want to save their life will lose it, and whose who lose their life for my sake will save it.  What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves.

9:46    An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest.  But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child…for the least among all of you is the greatest

9:57    someone said, “I will follow you wherever you go.”  Jesus: “Foxes have holes..”

9:62    No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the K of G

10:4    70 others:  Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals,

10:7    Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house.  Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you.

10:35  Good Samaritan:  Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.

11:3    Give us each day our daily bread

11:4    Forgive everyone indebted to us

11:39    Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish; but inside you are full of greed and wickedness..So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you.

11:42     But woe to you Pharisees!  For you tithe mint and ru and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have practiced, without neglecting the others.

12:13    Inheritance.  Friend, who sent me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?  Take care!  Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.

12:16    then he told them a parable:  rich fool with barn.  Soul, you have ample good laid up for many years…So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.

12:22    Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing…Consider the lilies ...And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying.  But strive for the K of Go and these things will be given to you as well

12:32    Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good please to give you the kingdom.  Sell your possessions, and give alms.  Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, and unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

12:42    Whoe then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time/  Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives.  Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions.

13:9    But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes ….  For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

14:12    When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors,….but invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.  And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

14:25    Now large crowds were travelling with him…whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother…whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple..for which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down and estimate the cost…Or what king, going out to  wage war….So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

15:1    Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him.

15:12    Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me

15:31    Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours

16:1    Dishonest Steward:  ??? Make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes

16:10    Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.  If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?  And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own?  No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other.  ***You cannot serve God and wealth.

16:14    The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him.  So he said, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomonation in the sight of God.

16:17    But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.

16:17  LAZARUS  and rich man.  Abraham:  Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.  Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed..

17:28    Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot:  they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day that Lot Left…so it will be on the day that the Son of man is revealed

17:31    On that day, anyone on the housetop who has belongings in the house must not come down to take them away; and likewise anyone in the field must not turn back.  Remember Lot’s wife.  Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it.

18:3    Widow to unjust judge:  Grant me justice against my opponent

18:10ff      Two men went up to the temple to pray: Pharisee and tax collector.  Pharisee:  I give a tenth of all my income. (tithing is important, but must not be a basis for pride) Tax Collector.  I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.

18:18   Rich Young Ruler.  You shall not steal.  I have kept all these since my youth.  There is still one thing lacking.  Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.  But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich..How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the k of G!  Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the K of God

18:27    What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.

18:28    Peter:  Look, we have left our homes and followed you.  Jesus:  Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the K of God, who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.

18:31    Then he took the 12 aside:  See, we are going up to Jerusalem.. blind man begging

19:1      Zacchaeus.  He was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was.   Jesus:  I must stay at your house today.  So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.  All who saw it began to grumble and said “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”  Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.:  then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.  For the son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost”

19:11 (same crowd as Zaccheus) He went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.  Parable of the talents.  He summoned ten slaves and gave them ten pounds.  Do business with these until I come back.  One pound to ten.  Well done.  Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.  Man buried the talent.  Why then did you not put my money into the bank?  Then when I returned I could have collected it with interest. He said to the bystanders:  take the pound from him and give it to the man who has ten pounds.  I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given.  But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be kind voer them – bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.”  (??)

19:45    Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things.  “My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers.”

20:9    Parable:  a man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went to another country for a long time.  When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants in order that they might give him his share of the produce….  “This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours.  The owner will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.  (the stone that the builder rejected…)

20:22    Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?

20:45 (in hearing of all the people)  Beware of the scribes..They devour widows’ houses…

21:1    He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.  Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contribugted out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.

21:34    Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap.

22:3    Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot…they were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money.

22:24  (after last supper) A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.  The greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leaer like one who serves..  But I am among you as one who serves

22:35    When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?  They said, “No, not a thing.”  He said, “But now, the one who has a purse must take it, and likewise a bag.  And the one who ahs no sword must sell his cloak and buy one.  For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me, “And he was counted among the  lawless:

23:2    Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate:  “We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king”
